Purpose

Limits aren’t final.

Why we exist. Some problems stay unsolved because everyone agreed they couldn’t be. VARL exists to take those on: the limits in medicine, energy, water, food, and how we live on this planet that we refuse to accept as the end of the story.

More is possible.

What we believe. Today’s limits aren’t permanent. They’re the edge of what we understand so far. Look closely enough, measure carefully enough, and what seemed fixed begins to move.

Big, hard, and worth it.

Problems worth solving. We choose problems that are large, difficult, and long. The kind that change what’s possible for millions of people once they’re solved, and stay solved. It’s what shapes our work in Human, Energy, Water, Food, Earth, and Space.

Made to last decades.

Built for the long term. We’re not building for the next quarter. We’re building an institution that can carry a question across years, and sometimes decades, without losing its way.

Principles

How we get there matters, too.

Making more possible isn’t only about the result we’re aiming for. It’s about how we get there. What we prioritize, which evidence we trust, and what we’re willing to rethink are part of the technology we build. These principles guide our decisions.

How We Work

This is how ideas move forward.

We start with a question we want to answer. We bring people who can see that question from different angles to the same table. We explore ideas with models, test them in experiments, and refine them with what we learn. And when the technology we need doesn’t exist yet, we build that too.

One question. Many minds.

Same question. Different expertise. People who know different parts of a problem work on the same study. Expertise isn’t there to offer an opinion; it sets the direction of the research. A detail one person notices can change the approach another is building. So we bring different fields together at the start of the work, not at the end.

See what could happen.

We open up the possibilities first. What could a change improve? What else might it affect? Models help us explore these questions across different scenarios. So we don’t only follow the first path that comes to mind; we look at which other paths might be possible. To choose the next step we’ll test in the real world more carefully.

If it doesn’t exist, we build it.

If what we need isn’t there, we make it. Sometimes what’s missing is a measurement tool. Sometimes a model. Sometimes an approach no one has tried yet. We don’t shape our work around what off-the-shelf technology can do. We first work out what the problem needs, then build what meets that need. Sometimes the way to a new solution is a new instrument.

It has to work for real.

It has to work in the real world. We compare what the model predicts with what we measure in the experiment. Where do they agree? Where do they part ways? Those differences show under which conditions an idea works, and what needs another look. We’re not after a trial that merely looks successful. We want a result we can explain: why it works, and where its limits are.

Never from zero.

Not from scratch every time. What we learn in one study doesn’t stay in that project. We record the results, the methods, and the paths that didn’t work. New findings send us back to re-evaluate our models and tools. So the next study starts not just from an answer, but from everything learned on the way to it.

Careers
at VARL

Extraordinary companies
are run by extraordinary people.

VARL was founded to take on the problems others had set aside. The kind that decide how well we live, how long we live, and what kind of planet we leave behind. We bring together people who see those problems differently, give them what they need to understand them completely, and build what’s missing when nothing else will do. Because when one of these problems gives way, it changes what’s possible for everyone.
